This year, 2006, was a very successful year in many ways. The buoyant
Australian dollar meant we were able to add some important resources to
our collections; we completed (by and large) the Harvard Yenching
Retroconversion Project, and were able to further develop the Chinese
Digital Archive 1966-1976. We also made some important staff
appointments in the East Asian area.

Retroconversion Project>
We are now very
close to
completing our Retroconversion
Project to
automate the 67,000+ records for the Harvard Yenching Collection. This
year we sent our last batch of nearly 3,000 records to OCLC for
conversion. All records received from OCLC are now in our online
catalogue. However, there are some 4,000 records that have not yet been
entered online for various reasons, and there are plans to convert
these over time.
The ANU Library
catalogue now
contains records for
almost the entire
CJK collection. There is only a 'small' (comparatively speaking)
backlog of approximately 25,000 uncatalogued items that are traceable
only through the card catalogue. The card catalogues which have been
such a long-standing and familiar feature of the Menzies Building foyer
will be reduced to one block of drawers in 2007, a nostalgic reminder
of a past era.
3. Chinese
Digital
Archive, 1966-1976
The Chinese Digital
Archive
1966-76 was expanded to
include some new
material.
This Archive of
scanned
documents and images from the
Cultural
Revolution period was created in 2000 and has been growing slowly but
steadily ever since. Early materials scanned into the Archive
concentrated on hand-written or print documents held in the ANU
Library's collection, but over the years the range of materials in the
Archive grew to incorporate slides from private sources and political
cartoons published in Red Guard and other newspapers of the period.
In 2006, we have
been able to
devote more attention to
building and
improving the Archive. We employed a fulltime assistant (Ms. Li Li) for
three months who worked on scanning, indexing and uploading new
content. As a result, we added 75 political cartoons to the Archive.
The cartoons, many of which are multi-page story cartoons, were
obtained through Mr. Song Yongyi in the United States, and represent a
unique resource for research. We plan to enlarge the collection of
cartoons if possible. We have also added a collection of Mongolian
Cultural Revolution documents to the Archive. The originals of this
material is in the possession of a UK scholar working on the Mongolian
experience of the Cultural Revolution, who discovered our Archive on
the web and offered his documents to be added to the Archive. We also
loaded 95 files (1,583 pages) of Yunnan Red Guard materials, this from
our own collection.
The size of the
Archive grew
by 40% in 2006 bringing the
number of
files in the Archive to 450 and the number of pages into the tens of
thousands. Work was also undertaken on standardising and enhancing the
metadata accompanying this material.
Apart from increased
content,
we transferred the Archive
from the
ContentDM management system to DSpace. The successful migration was
ably overseen by Darrell Dorrington and staff in the ANU's Digital
Repositories Program. Plans are in place for improving the searching
and display features of the Archive, and we look forward to further
improvements in 2007.

4. Staff
appointments
We have had a boost
in staff
support as well. In
February, Miyuki
Matthews was appointed Technical Services Officer, working with
Japanese resources and Mr. Yu Sasaki was appointed Technical Services
Assistant, also working with Japanese resources. In October, Mr.
Darrell Dorrington was appointed Collection Development Coordinator and
is responsible for China/Korea collection development. These
appointments will strengthen our activities in these areas. |
