Melbourne Centre for Japanese Language Education (MCJLE) Collection

The MCJLE Collection (as it is commonly known) was a focus of attention in the Monash Library during the week after Easter, when the MCJLE celebrated its 10th anniversary. The MCJLE, which is based at Monash, is funded by an endowment from the Nippon Foundation to provide professional support to teachers of Japanese in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania through a variety of activities and programs. Amongst these is the MCJLE Collection, which is a major collaborative project of the MCJLE and the Library. The Library houses and manages the Collection and receives funding from the MCJLE for collection development and staffing. The Collection consists of Japanese language resource material for use in the teaching of Japanese such as kits, flash cards, audio visual and electronic resources, readers and workbooks. School-teachers register with the MCJLE in order to borrow these and other Monash library materials.

For the MCJLE's tenth anniversary, ASRC staff prepared a colourful display of MCJLE materials and conducted tours of the Collection for delegates attending the MCJLE's international symposium on the future of Japanese language education. Perhaps the most important visitors to the Library on this occasion were Ms Ellen Mashiko and Mr Isamu Maruyama, the Director and Chief Program Administrator of the Scholarship division of the Tokyo Foundation, which administers the Nippon Foundation's grant to the MCJLE.
