| The UTS Library has been developing its Chinese collection for several years in order to support the University's Chinese teaching, learning and research programs. The collection was started in 1997 when the Faculty of Business established its MBA-Mandarin International program and now contains a substantial number of Chinese books in the areas of management, accounting, marketing, finance and business law. The collection has also grown in other areas. Lately the focus has been on rapidly acquiring Chinese language and culture learning materials to support expanding Chinese language teaching programs and China focused research. The traditional Chinese medicine collection contains some materials in Chinese although much of it is in English. A recent large donation contains documents and publications on the Chinese Communist Party, Anti-Japanese War in China, Shanxi Province and the Cultural Revolution. When this material is added to the collection it will provide a valuable resource for researchers working in these areas. The Library's Chinese catalogue allows clients to use Chinese characters or pinyin to search for Chinese resources in the collection. NJ Star Communicator software which supports Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters input is installed on all Library computers and will soon be available campus wide. Chinese resources are increasingly available in electronic format as well as print. The SuperStar Digital Library provides access to a very large collection of Chinese electronic books covering a wide range of subjects and additional electronic book and journal databases are under investigation. The Library provides considerable support for international students including a web page highlighting services, library guides in selected languages and the International News and Cultural Centre, a space in the Blake Library with overseas newspapers and magazines in various languages, travel guides and cultural books for international students. The International Librarian supports all international students at UTS and liaises with the Institute for International Studies and other client groups. As a native Chinese speaker, the International Librarian has been responsible for the expansion of the Chinese collection, the Chinese web pages and the Chinese library guides. As UTS continues to expand its international programs, both on and off shore, the Library will continue to develop the Chinese collection and services to support the university's teaching, learning and research. |
